Business Manager

The Business Manager is involved in managing all of the business aspects of the practice such as making sure that the right systems are in place to provide high quality patient care, human resources, finance, patient safety, premises and equipment and information technology. The Business Manager supports the GPs and other medical professionals with delivering patient services and also helps to develop extended services to enhance patient care.

Quality Development Manager

The Quality Development Manager is responsible for driving innovation, automation, and the development of patient services while ensuring equitable access for all. This role involves implementing and maintaining practice policies and procedures to support quality assurance, continuous improvement, and compliance with relevant legislation, including regulations set by the Care Quality Commission (CQC).

Dr Crispin Fisher

GP Partner

Gender: Male
Primary qualifications: BA (Cantab), MBBS (London), DRCOG, MRCP, FRCGP

Crispin Fisher trained at Cambridge University & St Thomas’ Hospital, London. After hospital posts in London, Hereford & Middlesbrough he completed his GP training locally. He worked for two years as a GP in the Falkland Islands, before starting here at The Marches Surgery in 1998. He has a special interest in drug dependency problems, and enjoys the privilege of working as a generalist, supporting and getting to know patients over many years.

Crispin was involved in commissioning of local NHS services when he served with the CCG as a Board Member and Primary Care Lead for two years. He has been actively involved in the merger of the two Leominster surgeries to create Ryeland Surgery, and continues to work to achieve a new Primary Care Centre for Leominster.

Outside work, his family (now including grand-children), music (particularly singing in a local church choir) and the occasional run help keep him going.

Dr Judith Johnson

GP Partner

Primary qualifications: MA (Oxon), BM BCh, MRCGP, DFSRH, CME, DipSEM (Bath)

Judith Johnson qualified from Oxford University in 1995. She trained as a GP on the Oxford VTS & worked there until 2002 when she moved with her family to Hereford.

She has always been involved in sport & has developed an interest in Sports Medicine. In 2009 she started studying for the Diploma in Sports and Exercise Medicine which she gained in 2012. She is also interested in Women’s Health & fits coils and contraceptive implants at the practice.

Outside of General Practice Judith regularly trains and competes her horses. She is also a keen skier and escapes to the mountains as often as she can.

Dr Edward Drew

GP Partner

Edd studied medicine at Cardiff University, graduating in 2008. As a Junior doctor he continued to work across South Wales settling in a role as a Plastic Surgery fellow in Swansea. He continued on to complete his GP training in 2017, maintaining his interest as a surgical lead GP in a South Powys practice.  
Originally from the West Midlands, Edd was keen to return with his young family to familiar countryside surroundings. Edd is a keen sportsman although finally concedes his rugby playing days are behind him and now enjoys spending time outside, both at ground level and up in the air across at Shobdon airfield.

Dr Naomi Flowers

Graduated from Cardiff University in 2010. Naomi enjoys the continuity of patient care which general practice offers.

She has a keen interest in dermatology, women’s health and menopause as well as being able to fit contraceptive coils and implants.

She enjoys country walks with her family as well as horse riding in her spare time. 

Dr Isobel Lane

Izzy studied medicine at Cardiff University and qualified in 2011.

She developed an interest in research undertaking a research masters at Imperial College and completing an Academic Clinical Fellowship during her GP training. After graduating she trained in Bath, Swindon and Bristol before moving to London to work for several years.

She has now returned to Herefordshire where she grew up and is enjoying setting up a smallholding with her husband. 

Dr Liz Gwilliam

Born and bred in South Wales I qualified from Charing Cross and Westminster Medical School in London in 1995.

I came to Herefordshire in 1996 to do GP training.

I have been a partner at Westfield Surgery since 2000 and continue to live locally.
Away from work I enjoy spending time with my family, singing, travelling and being an avid Welsh rugby supporter.

Following my medical degree in Glasgow I completed GP training in Herefordshire. I subsequently worked at Westfield Surgery in Leominster until 2014. Since then I have undertaken several different salaried GP posts in both Herefordshire and Worcester. My clinical interests are care homes, frailty, palliative care and managing complex patients. In addition to working as a GP I also spend 2 days a week working as a Medical Examiner in both Birmingham and Worcestershire.
 
Out of work I spend my time running, cycling, walking my 2 lively Jack Russell Terriers and organizing my 14 year old son and his many musical instruments!

Dr Mhairi Yates

Mhairi worked as a GP in the North of England for 20 years before relocating to Herefordshire. She has had various roles in End of Life Care, Safeguarding and Quality Improvement. She and her husband love walking their Border Collie around the beautiful countryside and looking after their two small grandchildren.

Dan is originally from the Midlands and studied Medicine in Southampton University.
He lived in Hampshire for a few years before doing core surgical training back in the Midlands and becoming a ENT Registrar specialist.

After finding family life was more important he decided to complete further training in General Practice and has working in Birmingham and Worcester before coming to Leominster. Dan enjoys cricket and rugby in his spare time.

Dr Iona Clark

Iona studied medicine at the University of Birmingham, graduating in 2014. She continued to work in Birmingham as a junior doctor and completed GP training in 2020. She has an interest and experience in medical education, teaching and supervising medical students and GP registrars.

Iona joined Ryeland Surgery in 2023 after moving to enjoy a more rural lifestyle. Outside of work, she enjoys spending time outdoors hiking the local hills with her dog and seeking out wild swim spots when the weather allows.

Dr Giles Dawnay

Giles has lived and trained in Herefordshire since 2014, where he currently lives with his wife and young twins.

Prior to becoming a doctor he studied English literature and Spanish, before going on to live and work in South America, West Africa and Fiji where he oversaw and coordinated rural volunteer projects and overland expeditions.
Alongside medicine, he has a great passion for writing and the great outdoors. He has had various poetry and longer writings published over the last few years. Otherwise he endeavours to travel by bike as much as possible and looks for any chance to get to the sea with his surfboard.

Priya has lived in the US, UK and Hungary. After completing Medical school, she returned to the UK and worked in Essex, London, Stafford and completed her GP training in Birmingham.

Outside of work, she enjoys reading thrillers and historical fiction, karaoke in the car, and taking any opportunity to travel.

Dr Lucy Glasgow, who has been on placement with us for the last year whilst completing her specialist GP training, is now fully qualified and we are delighted that she has chosen to join the team permanently. She will be working Monday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday.

Natalie Kempshall

Advanced Nurse Practitioner

Natalie Kempshall qualified in 2004 as a nurse, and has been Advanced Nurse Practitioner for many years. She has had a variety of roles both clinical and non-clinical. She has skills in advanced practice at Masters Level including Non-medical prescribing. In addition, she has a Master’s in Business Administration: Executive Leadership and Management. She has worked in senior management, service improvement, project management and commissioning within primary care services.

She is the Quality Improvement Lead for the surgery.

In her spare time, Natalie enjoys spending time with her partner and son, reading and running.

Caroline Mansell

Advanced Nurse Practitioner

Caroline Mansell is an autonomous Advanced Nurse Practitioner who has completed her Masters Level education and training.

She worked at Wye Valley Trust for several years, on the Stroke Unit, a variety of Medical Wards, District Nursing and Continuing Health Care. Throughout her career, she has gained a variety of extended skills. 

Caroline is the Care Home and Learning Disability Lead for the surgery and also, has two clinics a week in Bodenham and Leominster.

Martin Fulloway

Urgent Care Practitioner

Martin qualified as a RGN in 1991 and worked in A&E and Emergency medicine before joining the ambulance service in 1995. His roles in the ambulance service included Clinical supervisor, Paramedic and Advanced paramedic working with primary care, and emergency planning.
He has 25 years frontline paramedic experience on both ambulances and rapid response cars. He spent 7 years in the Royal Auxiliary Air force as an aeromedical evacuation Nurse/Paramedic and saw active service during the Gulf conflict.
He has worked for the last 4 years at both Westfield and Ryeland surgeries as an Urgent Care Practitioner, He is the practice’s Military Veteran Lead. In his spare time he is an Officer the Air Training Corps and enjoys walking and Archeology.

James Swinford

First Contact Practitioner

James works as a Musculoskeletal First Contact Practitioner at Ryelands Surgery. He qualified as a Physiotherapist in 2006 from the University of Brighton and is originally from Kent, moving to University in Eastbourne and then spending a further 18 years by the seaside before making the move with his young family to Herefordshire at the end of 2024.
He has worked in a variety of physiotherapy fields and roles including NHS, Private, semi-professional and professional football and other sports, in addition to spending a year working as a physiotherapist in Dubai. He also has a degree in Sport and Exercise Science from the University of Bedfordshire.
His varied roles have also seen him work as a trainer and supervisor to fellow physiotherapists and he enjoys helping patients to fully understand their problems, offering reassurance and education and enabling them to achieve their personal goals.
In his spare time James enjoys playing and watching football, badminton and running, listening to music and spending time with his family and friends.

Nursing Team

Practice nurses are qualified and registered nurses. They can help with health issues such as healthy living advice. They run wound and leg ulcer clinics. The practice nurses run clinics for long-term health conditions such as asthma, COPD, Heart Disease and Diabetes helping patients to manage long term conditions. They carry out cervical cytology screening, provide pre foreign travel advice and NHS vaccinations and immunisations for children and adults in line with the NHS immunisation schedule.

I have been a practice nurse in Leominster for 21 years, working at The Marches for 4 years and the last 17 years at Westfield Surgery. I have nursed many of the babies to the OAP,s of Leominster. I am probably renowned for my practical ‘come on let’s get on with this ‘approach and hopefully my sense of humour!

Healthcare Assistants

Healthcare assistants support practice nurses with their daily work and carry out tasks such as phlebotomy (drawing blood), blood pressure measurement, new patient checks, NHS health checks, ECGs and diabetic foot checks. They also do B12 injections and some vaccinations such as flu, covid, pneumonia and shingles in line with the NHS immunisation schedule.  They may also act as a chaperone when a patient or doctor requests one.
